(FS)

Secanggang Children, from Qur’anic Studies to Agroecology Farming

Fachrizal Sinaga

Langkat (kpa.or.id) – The location wasn’t luxurious, only simple housing with wood board walls around it. Close to Maghrib (Dusk Prayer time), that house suddenly were crowded with kids. Indeed, that house is a place to study Qur’an for the children of Secanggang Village that is routinely organized from every Monday to Saturday.

Nurul is a woman from Secanggang Village who pioneered the initiative of Qur’anic Education Center (Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an/TPA). She told the stories of the TPA opening in her house. She confessed that she was worried and sympathized seeing the children’s daily situation where they must go to the next village everyday to study the Qur’an while crossing the plantation areas without an adequate street lighting.

“In the beginning there are only 3 students and neighbor’s children. Slowly but surely, one by one, the parents started to entrust their children to study here”, said Nurul.

With the addition of students, Nurul felt the needs to build and upgrade the facilities in the school so that the process of Qur’anic studies can be more focused and effective even though with several limitations faced. But Nurul does not give up, used plywood given by her neighbors were painted black and transformed to blackboard, while the students brought chalks from each of their homes.

Slowly, the villagers of Secanggang cooperate in assisting Nurul to further develop the TPA facilities. The blackboard was replaced with better ones and they even provided smaller tables. Reading materials for children are also available, although only few in numbers.

Currently, there are 15 children routinely studying the Qur’an every afternoon in Nurul’s TPA.

In the training of Agrarian Reform Advanced Village (Desa Maju Reforma Agraria/DAMARA) held sometime ago, the people agreed to further develop that TPA. The customary values of Penunggu indigenous people are one of the subjects that will be compiled within the curriculum.

The children are also encouraged to study the agroecology farming to establish emotional bonds with their village lands.

The village officials have also thought on the financial support or salary for the teachers from the selling of harvests in the collective farming.

“If we don’t develop our own kampong (village), who else will?” stated Nurul brimming with hope. (FS)
